Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU has sanctioned much of Russia’s economy, but Russia’s natural gas trade remains untouched. The EU gets nearly a quarter of its energy from natural gas, and almost half of that comes from Russia, the world’s largest gas exporter. As the EU’s largest economy, Germany is Russia’s biggest customer, paying Russia’s state-owned gas company 200 million euros. So while Germany has even sent Ukraine weapons, in a historic shift of military policy, through its gas supply Germany is helping to pay for the war it’s trying to stop.

How Russia DOUBLED Its Fossil Fuel BILLIONS by Invading Ukraine
Despite the wave of international sanctions that threatened to crush its economy, Russia has managed to double its revenues from selling fossil fuels to the EU since invading Ukraine.
Benefiting from the soaring cost of fuel even as its export volume dropped drastically, the Kremlin has been able to generate almost 62 billion euros from the sale of oil, gas and coal in just two months.
It's a paradoxical dynamic: the harsher the sanctions, the higher the price of the gas is going to get.
As the main source of gas for several nations, the Kremlin has a stranglehold on Europe's energy supply, even while governments have frantically sought to prevent Vladimir Putin using oil and gas as an economic weapon.

Ukrainian drones blow up one of Russia’s biggest oil refineries at Ryazan in brazen drone attack
One of Russia’s biggest oil refineries has been blown up by Ukrainian drones in one of the most brazen attacks of the war to date. Footage shows unmanned aircraft raiding the refinery in broad daylight, easily bypassing air defences to crash into the distillation towers. These towers are the most crucial part of the plant and are expensive and difficult to replace. Each of the towers at Ryazan was hit multiple times during the onslaught on March 13. The refinery produces oil both for Russian consumption and as valuable exports to fuel Putin’s war machine. Destroying them hurts the Russian war effort and Putin’s personal reputation as protector of the nation. And it is no coincidence that the attack has been timed to coincide with the Russian election which takes place later this week. Ther...

Schwarzenegger Slams Europe for Russia Fuel Purchase
The former Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, on Tuesday slammed European nations for continuing to buy oil from Russia, saying it was "financing the war" in Ukraine.
Schwarzenegger, who has long campaigned against environmental pollution, said the war in Ukraine was one more reason to stop using fossil fuels.
Schwarzenegger was addressing a climate conference entitled "Austrian World Summit" in Vienna.
His speech was live-streamed from Toronto, Canada, where the actor is currently filming a new series.
Schwarzenegger cited research showing that Europe paid Russia tens of billions of dollars for energy imports in the first two months of the year.
“No matter how you look at it, we have blood on our hands because we are financing the war,” he said.
“We must do whatever it t...

At the height of the crisis, the queues of cars at the petrol pumps stretched for several city blocks.
For weeks, the fuel crisis has pushed the beleaguered Cuban people to the brink of desperation.

It’s inherently hard to pivot away from piped gas. Unlike oil and coal, which can be rerouted, gas pipelines cost billions, take years to build, and physically connect producer and buyer directly, making them long-term commitments. That was the origin of Germany’s dependence on Russian gas, and over time it’s only deepened. Today, as the world tries to punish Russia through sanctions, that dependence is getting in the way.

There is little doubt that Putin will win another term in power, but Kyiv is hoping to make that extra term as difficult as possible for the Russian despot. #russia #ukraine #war

“We must do whatever it takes to eliminate our addiction to fossil fuels,” he added. “We must be part of the solution, not part of the problem. Failure is no option here.”
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres also delivered a pre-recorded video message at the event in which he warned of a "dangerous disconnect" between what scientists and citizens are demanding to curb climate change, and what governments are actually doing about it.

Amid a crippling fuel crisis and a dire economic outlook, the island's leadership has again turned to its old ally, Russia, for help.
At the height of the crisis, the queues of cars at the petrol pumps stretched for several city blocks.
For weeks, the fuel crisis has pushed the beleaguered Cuban people to the brink of desperation.
It's the latest in a series of major challenges Cuba have faced recently: food insecurity, inflation and electricity blackouts.
